McDuffie, for me, was one of those guys who 'got' the characters he was writing. He wasn't a continuity-fanatic, or a 'reinventionist', or a 'back-to-basics guy'...he was the guy who wrote the best story he could about the characters in front of him. He added to the toy-box, instead of taking things out.
He just wanted to tell the best story he could in the time or page count available. Ain't no higher compliment than that in my book.
Basically, dude could write. And the stories that come after will be the poorer for his absence.
